This is so big!

"Big things" have been happening to people in the scrapbooking industry and now they are happening to me! Big Picture Scrapbooking is what's happening. I had a fun and inspiring chat with Stacy over at BPS and it sounds like my pop-up tutorials and their teaching philosophy could make a really good pair.

In case you're not familiar with Big Picture Scrapbooking (this is for the illustration ladies not the scrapbooking folks {I know you know who they are}), they are an online hub for inspirational classes in scrapbooking and paper craft. And their teachers are some of the leaders in the scrapbooking field. In other words, you can learn from the best of the best while sitting in your PJs in front of your computer! Now THAT is harnessing the power of the internet!!

I am currently in the developmental stages of designing some creative online pop-up classes. And hopefully they will be available on Big Picture Scrapbooking soon! I am very, very excited and I will provide you with more details as soon as I have some. Stay tuned!

Pop-Up Cell Phone

This is a fun pop-up card that I illustrated and engineered for Gartner Greetings. When you open it the cell phone comes popping out at you. The fun thing about this card is that the cell phone opens to reveal a birthday message. Now that's what I call interactive!

Exciting News

After just one short month of The Princess of Pop-Ups being live we are already getting noticed. The D.a.i.s.i.e company has asked me to design downloadable pop-up card kits for their online shop. In the wonderful world of scrapbooking that makes me a "Daisie Girl."

I will be designing exclusive pop-up card kits for them. Unfortunately they will not be free but I promise they will be inexpensive and super fabulous. This gives me the opportunity to include my artwork on the pop-ups which I am very excited about.

I'm working on my first kit now and I will make an announcement on this blog everytime I have something new in the shop. Long story short, stay tuned!

Pop-Up Card Lesson: Fortune Cookie

This lesson teaches you how to make a pop-up fortune cookie, complete with fortune (of course). The pop-up was designed by me, Mary Beth Cryan. You can download the cutting lines in step number 1.

Front

1. Download the cutting lines by clicking here.

2. Cut a stiff piece of paper 6" x 8" and fold it in half to create the card body.

3. Tape the cookie cutting lines to a piece of "cookie" colored paper. Tape the fortune cutting lines to "fortune" colored paper (I used regular, white card stock). The stiffer scrapbook paper works best.

4. Using a ruler and a bone folder (or ballpoint pen) make dents along the folding line. This will insure that you fold in exactly the right spots.

5. Cut out the pieces.

6. Ink around the edges of the cookie to give it a yummy "browned" looked.

7. Fold on the indents you made earlier. Reference the picture to determine which direction the folds should go (mountain or valley).

8. Apply glue to the front of the fortune piece in the indicated area.

9. Turn over both the cookie and the fortune. Glue the fortune so it fits perfectly inside your cut lines and your fold lines. This piece should NOT overlap any edges or folds.

10. Fold the cookie back to the front and write your sentiment on the fortune.

11. On the inside fold of your card. Measure down 2.25" from the top and make a dot on the crease.

12. On the back of the cookie, apply glue to the two indicated areas (the flaps).

13. Line up the point where all 3 creases meet (on the bottom edge of the cookie) to the dot you made on the crease. Also, line up the middle crease in the cookie and the middle crease in your card PERFECTLY and press down the areas with glue.

14. Your card should look like this.

15. Close the card. The cookie and fortune should fit perfectly inside the card. If any part is sticking out then you probably didn't glue the point exactly 2.25" from the top of the card. If the card does not close easily then you probably didn't line up your creases perfectly. Go back and try to glue again.

16. My piece of paper was not double sided this time so I cut another piece of paper 6" x 4".

17. And glued it on the front.

Congratulations, you're done with the pop-up! Now decorate the front and add a greeting. I would love to see what you've done with the pop-up so don't hesitate to email me pictures of your pop-up creations.

Pop-Up Card Lesson: Valentine's Day Spiral

This lesson teaches you how to incorporate photos of the ones you love into a Valentine's Day Spiral greeting card. This lesson does not have a downloadable template because you don't need one. This card was designed by me, Mary Beth Cryan.
© 2008 Mary Beth Cryan

Directions:

1. Cut a piece of paper 5" x 10" and fold it in half to create the card body.

2. Measure and cut a circle that has a diameter of 4.75"

3. Draw this funny little shape on one side of the circle.

4. Draw a spiral on the circle. I drew mine in marker but you may want to draw in pencil so you can erase the lines after.

5. Cut out the before mentioned "funny little shape."

6. Cut out the spiral.

7. Turn over the spiral and add a glue dot in the very center.

8. Turn the card back over and position the spiral on the card as shown.

9. Press down on the center firmly to adhere the center in place with your furry, little, white paw.

10. Adhere a glue dot to the end of the spiral.

11. Close the card and press down to adhere with the same furry, white paw.

12. Open the card and you should have a beautiful, big spiral. If you want your spriral on the other side of the card, just turn the card 180 degrees.

11. Cut little hearts out of various papers and photos.

12. Glue the hearts onto the spiral and surrounding card.

13. Make sure that all your hearts fit inside the card when it's closed.

Congratulations, you're done with the pop-up! Now decorate the front and add a greeting. I would love to see what you've done with the pop-up so don't hesitate to email me pictures of your pop-up creations.
